Nana Jo’s Peppernuts (Pfeffernusse Cookies)

 2 cups molasses
 2 cups dark syrup
 1 ½ cups sugar
 2 cups Crisco
 ¾ cup milk
 12 cups flour (13, if needed)
 1 ½ tsp baking powder
 ½ tsp baking soda
 1 ½ tsp powdered cardamon
 1 ½ tsp cinnamon
 1 tsp salt
 1 tsp anise oil
 3 tsp vanilla
 ¾ tsp cloves
 1 tsp nutmeg

Bring molasses and dark syrup to a boil and cool.

Cream Crisco & sugar, adding vanilla and cooled molasses and syrup mix.

Sift together spices, salt, baking powder and soda with flour.

Add flour alternately with milk.

Chill in refrigerator overnight.

Take a small amount of doll, roll in long thin lines.

Cut in small pieces, roll into balls, and place on cookie sheet

Bake at 350 degrees until lightly browned, about 8 to 10 minutes.
